Socks with Sustenance: Spring 2014

Spreading your message by wearing custom socks is becoming an increasingly popular trend. This spring alone there are dozens of worthy causes vying for your attention, the world over. Of course Custom Sock Shop will do anything we can to help promote the awareness- and fund-raising of all of our brothers and sisters who see socks as the path to bettering humankind. Here are five of our favorite socially conscious sock peddlers of Spring 2014:

Sock Hop (March 8): This weekend the American Legion is holding their 7th annual Sock Hop dance to benefit Veterans in San Jose, California. Come dressed in your poodle skirt or other 1950s-gear, bring at least two pairs of new socks to donate to men and women veterans, and don’t forget your sock hop dance moves! Check out the flier for details.Funky Custom Socks

Lots of Socks (March 21): Lots of Socks is an annual effort put forth by Downs Syndrome International, in which this much-deserving charity invites everyone across the globe to wear their loudest pairs of socks to raise awareness of Downs Syndrome. These socks might be the official Lots of Socks striped logo, or they might be something you already have. You could wear one sock or three socks…Just make sure folks notice them! More information and official Lots of Socks gear can be obtained on the Downs Syndrome International website.

Silly Sock Day (April 4): Nothing grabs someone’s attention better than a pair of silly socks, and the UK-based charity Autism Anglia is determined to exploit this human weakness. In order to help fundraise for World Autism Awareness Day, Autism, Anglia is asking you to wear your silliest socks and help collect donations on April 4th. See their website for more.

Jump for Sock it to Sarcoma! (April 5-6): How far would you go to help your cause? Would you roll up with someone else like a balled-up pair of socks to tandem skydive, freefalling from 14000 feet in the air? If so then this might be your match. The early-April “jump” is one of the many year-round efforts that Australian-based Sock it to Sarcoma makes to promotes awareness of sarcoma and raise funds to support sarcoma research in WA. Check out their website and Facebook page for more information.

Socks for Life (April 7): Socks for Life wants you and your community to work within the creative medium of socks to help prevent, educate, and raise awareness about the problems and risks involved in premature birth. Some suggested examples of this are asking local artists to hold a sock-based exhibit reflecting on the issues of premature birth, arrange community craft activities using old and donated socks, and spreading information throughout your social media circles using the hashtag, #socksforlife.

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by all of your socks’ potential, you might need to take a breather and celebrate No Socks Day on May 8th. Or perhaps if you’re still mourning that one sock that got away this winter, on May 9th you can commemorate its honor for Lost Sock Memorial Day. Whether your raison d’etre is charitable or liberating, one thing is for certain: spring is the season for socks.
