The Sock Life

What to Do with the One Lonely Sock

We’ve all been there. The laundry machine eats one of your favorite socks and now you are stuck with a very lonely miscellaneous sock. Do you throw it out? Do you wear mismatching socks? We’re here to help you put that loner sock to good use. Here is a list of 10 ways to use the extra sock.

Store Your Game Pieces

Next time you reach for Clue or Monopoly, the fun won’t have to delay while you search for the tiny pieces. Your game pieces are safe when they are stored inside that random sock you have lying around. Just add the pieces inside and tie a knot in the sock to ensure the pieces won’t fall out.

Use Your Sock as a Whiteboard Eraser

There’s no need to buy an eraser for your whiteboard if you have a single sock. Just slip the sock over your hand and erase. No need to worry about the sock getting dirty since you likely won’t wear it again.

Store Your Glasses

If you store your glasses in a purse or bag and worry about them breaking or getting scratched but don’t have a protective case, don’t worry, we have a solution. Put your glasses in the sock and you are good to go. The sock will keep your glasses safe from the other items in your bag and will allow you to go on with your day, worry free!

Put Your Hair in a Sock Bun

If you have long hair, a sock bun is a great way to put the lone sock to good use and get your hair out of your face. To do the sock bun, you will need scissors, a ponytail holder, a few bobby pins, and of course the sock. Cut the toe off of your sock and roll the bun from the top (ankle) to bottom (toe). Your sock should be in a donut shape. Pull your hair into a ponytail at the top of your head. Hold your ponytail straight up in the air and slip the sock over it, pulling the sock to the ponytail holder. Spread your hair evenly around the sock and form the excess hair around it, creating a bun shape. Secure the hair with bobby pins and use hairspray if necessary.

Use as an Ice Pack

We often find ourselves reaching for the frozen peas when we scrape our knee or bump our head. For this tip, you can keep the peas in the kitchen and use your extra sock instead! Fill your sock with several ice cubes and tie the top of the sock in a knot. If you have a young child, choose a sock with their favorite character on it. That way, not only are you fixing their cut or scrape, but you are cheering them up and comforting them with something they love!

Make a Dog Toy

For this tip, we are proving that socks aren’t just for humans. If you have an old tennis ball lying around, stuff it inside a sock and tie the sock into a knot. Your dog will love chewing on the fabric. This new toy will keep them busy all day!

Open a Stubborn Jar

We understand the struggle of trying to open that stubborn jar in your cupboard. Use your spare sock to help open the jar so that you don’t hurt your palms.

Protect Your Golf Clubs

If you don’t have a formal golf sock for your clubs, that’s okay! The miscellaneous sock in your drawer works just as well to protect your golf clubs from the dirt and dust that might be in your garage or storage unit, or you could purchase some custom golf socks to really stand out.

Support Your Shoes

Structurally that is… No one enjoys shoving their shoes into a suitcase and pulling them out later, only to find them squished and distorted. To prevent this, roll your extra socks and stuff them inside each shoe to support them and keep them intact in your suitcase.

Use as a Koozie

Keep your drink cold by wrapping it in a sock. Just stick your beverage in the sock and fold it as much as necessary until the sock covers the whole drink. Pro-tip: Store your sock in the freezer so that it stays cold and keeps your drink cold even longer!
